Elinor Remick Warren's (1900-1991) transcription of the Anna Magdalena Notebook favourite, “Bist du bei mir” brings us more into later 20th century harmony somewhat more than the other transcriptions on this disc, but in a very positive way keeping with the general style of Herr Bach. That said, Angelika Nebel's take on all the others in this collection were lovingly rendered and remain memorable long after heard. The only recording I have heard of that Rummel piece that was awe-inspiring is that of Bruce Hungerford, which was performed in a live recital and issued privately. In fact, I didn't enjoy hearing Rummel play any of his otherwise incredibly extraordinary transcriptions since they were all played with little emotion. She conceives it very much like Walter Rummel's own recording of the work. My only disappointment was with Walter Rummel's “Ertöt uns durch dein Güte” (track 18), which seems to be played with virtually no emotion on the part of the pianist. She is one pianist who plays these transcriptions with a kind of keyboard momentum that renders them musically of the highest quality. Aside from a wonderfully made disc acoustically using a very fine Steinway conert grand piano, the one immediate point one discovers is the consistency of Angelika Nebel's pianism. Having such a variety of styles and pieces by Bach on one disc makes for an interesting and inspiring listening session. The disc at hand gives us twelve transcriptions on one disc by a variety of some of Bach's most famous keyboard transcribers and some that are far lesser known. Personally, I truly love these transcriptions as do, apparently, many other pianists and composers. Hyperion of England has been involved in an excellent survey (by transcriber) that has been most successful thus far. There has been a lot of interest in transcriptions of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach lately, particularly on records.
